Ways To Reduce Worry

Worrying is a part of everyone’s life but sometimes it can be overwhelming. There are some simple things you can do so try and stop worrying so much.

Learn to relax

This is not chilling in front of the TV or playing a computer game, it is relaxing your mind and body and being still.

Yoga exercises can help but you will need to take some time to learn to do them right.

Here are some tips:

  • Close your eyes and breathe slowly and deeply.
  • Locate any areas of tension and try to relax those muscles; imagine the tension disappearing.
  • Relax each part of the body, in turn, from your feet to the top of your head.
  • As you focus on each part of your body, think of warmth, heaviness and relaxation.
  • After 20 minutes, take some deep breaths and stretch your body.

Exercise

Exercise can help reduce anxiety. It improves your mood and generally makes you worry less.

Think about food

Lots of stimulants like caffeine (in coffee, coke, tea, chocolate) can make you jittery so reduce these if you can. Think about having a good balanced, healthy diet.

Write a list

This might help you focus on what the worry is and come up with a plan to solve it. Sometimes if you look at the list a few weeks later, you will realise that none of the worries came true. It might put things into perspective.

Take control and think positive

Try and set aside some time to think of really happy things.  Focus on all the good positive things that might be happening or let yourself dream and wish for wonderful things. Imagine the best that can happen.
